Never to stand on one's dignity. To choose always the hardest. The scientist who looks at the universe with an open mind and accepts whatever the universe has to teach us, or somebody who says everything in this book must be considered the literal truth and never mind the fallibility of all the human beings involved? I must judge, I must choose, I must spurn, purely for myself.
For myself, alone. A proud man is always looking down on thing and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you. Lewis, Mere Christianity. My own wisdom and that of all about me seemed insufficient for that day. You must keep your feet grounded so firmly on the earth that it's like you have 4 legs instead of 2.
That way, you can stay in the world. But you must stop looking at the world through your head. You must look through your heart, instead. That way, you will know God. That doesn't give you the right to deny any sense they might make.

Nor does it give you a right to accuse someone of poorly expressing their beliefs just because you don't like what they are saying. Learn to recognize good writing when you read it, even if it means overcoming your pride and opening your mind beyond what is comfortable. It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and humility.
TV That Promotes Humility
All that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, more worthy to be called the children of God. Keep me from becoming too talkative, and especially from the unfortunate habit of thinking that I must say something on every subject and at every opportunity. Release me from the idea that I must straighten out other peoples' affairs. With my immense treasure of experience and wisdom, it seems a pity not to let everybody partake of it.
God bless you! Ver impt article. Many including the religious are wasting too much and so many bcoz of humility lack. Humility, patience, forgiveness, etc. That was a really beautiful reminder…. I guess that means I needed to hear it. Such as when everybody is clearly, demonstrably, stubbornly, arrogantly, self-detrimentally, wrong?
It reminds me of the benedictine Wil Derkse explaining humility not as something negative as something for the weak, something slavish but rather as the power to serve. It is the easiest way to discount any valid, opposing argument. In fact, in my opinion, it is one of the primary reasons that humility has completely vanished from our political discourse.

Thanks to the internet, there is ever more chances for narcissists to try to bring attention to themselves and boasts. But that is out of my control and I can only watch and try to understand what they are trying to achieve. God tells us: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Phil Joshua, what a beautiful and practical post. It is the opposite of aggression, arrogance, pride, and vanity. And on the surface, it appears to empty its holder of all power. Your blog is so challenging. Thank you.
I have never understood what humility was fully about until I read this post. It brought tears to my eyes, finally understanding. Thank you for such a thoughtful post. Respecting others opinions is not only humility. But often it is the best way to learn you are wrong. I talk alot about this one too.
Great post and great reminder. I think we all need to focus on this DAILY to get the focus away from ourselves and on what is really important. Thanks you!
Joshua, I want to know if I can print off this story about humility? I teach a class at the county jail for adolescents who are being tried as adults. The class is called Character First. Humility is one of our character words. I am always looking for a broader level for the words we teach than just the sylibus.
Thanks I really enjoy your blog, and by the way I am 62 years old and working toward being a minimialist.
Humility in the Bible
Of course. I write so that it can be read. Thanks for letting me know how you are planning to use it. I appreciate hearing stories like this!
Thanks for the inspiration — so sweet and simple. I appreciate your delving into this particular virtue. A book really worth looking into on this topic is Humility by Andrew Murray. Read it? And by favorite I mean the one plaguing me in my desire to exude it and my struggle to actually do so.
Wanna break that one down for me in an inspirational post? Help a sister out. My favorite line from a movie: You are enlighten until you open your mouth. Instead, joy is found in helping others grow and succeed. Your blog is a blessing to many, us included.

This is what I love about your blog Joshua. Thank you for this post. It reached home for me today. The creative boost from humility means you:. A Catalyst study into six different countries and their employees found an interesting link between altruistic behavior and innovation.
Innovation went up in these teams, the more humility the management showed, creating a welcoming environment for people. The image shows how creative behavior went up, if managers showed humility. In the era of social media, which feeds your ego , regular exercise in humility is worth trying. But instead, you must start understanding the value of the action itself.
But consider the action and what value it would provide others. You need to valuate the deed for what it does to the company or your colleagues. A humble person would take it and understand the value for the company and the happiness for your manager for getting it done. Furthermore, when you do tasks, remember no success story happens with a single person. As the great innovator Henry Ford said:. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. Sometimes you must do what is required. Related to the other point is the exercise of doing your tasks without making a big number out of it.
The action matters and is valuable by itself, not you doing it. A great example of humility in doing what is expected of you comes from the World War II generation. But they never talked about it. It is about the collective responsibility and duty.
