Seagulls: are they really getting more aggressive?
The bacteria were found to be resistant to cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones, which are commonly used antimicrobial drugs in humans. Birds in NSW and Victoria were found to have resistance to carbapanem drugs, used to combat anti-microbial resistant infection in Australian hospitals when other drugs have failed.
The team also found evidence of a seagull at Cottesloe Beach in Western Australia carrying resistance to colistin, which is a last resort drug to fight antimicrobial resistant infection.
The birds "may then be subsequently spreading these resistant bacteria over vast distances", he said. The study's lead author Sam Abraham, wants governments to start addressing the issue of waste disposal and its accessibility to wildlife. Researchers think seagulls may be picking up the pathogens while scavenging human waste.
